The only real reason would be to resolve a problem that you are experiencing with a particular piece of hardware, or to gain an additional feature from that hardware (AND if a newer driver version addresses this issue - for example, the wireless function of your laptop may have an updated driver that allows connections to WPA2 encrypted networks). If and when you do find the need to update your drivers, the best place is often your computer manufacturers website. Such websites will not necessarily tell you which version of the driver you already have, but will usually include a release date and a list of fixes and upgrades that the newer driver provides. Your computer manufacturer will not always have the latest versions of all drivers, however you can be sure that they have been tested by the manufacturer and are certified for use. The best place to get the latest drivers for your hardware is from the hardware vendors website. An example would be to update the driver for your ATI graphics card.
